Course Length:

Note: This course is physically and mentally demanding and candidates will be exposed to enclosed spaces, high temperatures, physical exertion, and more. It is recommended that only fit and health candidates undertake this course.


Course Description: 

The course is designed to give candidates a basic understanding of types of fires, methods of extinguishing them and the onboard firefighting equipment.  Candidates are introduced to basic equipment maintenance, the use of breathing apparatus and search and rescue techniques as well as live firefighting.  The purpose-built Fire Training Centre, together with teaching staff whose experience of the Military, Merchant Navy and Fire and Rescue Service procedures, ensures a realistic and testing course, in a controlled environment.


Culminating in assessed firefighting and search and rescue scenarios, successful candidates will be equipped to operate under pressure and as part of a shipboard firefighting team.


Course Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the risks of fire onboard and how to minimise those risks.
  • Know how to fight and extinguish fires as well as search for and recover casualties; and
  • Know how to wear fire fighting equipment including personal breathing apparatus and safe use of fire extinguishers.

Certification: 

  • STCW Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Firefighting Certificate (Section A-VI/1- 2 of the STCW Code) - Valid for 5 years.


Direct Entry Assessment Available: No

  • Officers working on vessels subject to the SCV Code or larger.

32 hours.

  • STCW Fire Prevention and Firefighting; or 
  • STCW Updated Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Firefighting

Course Description: 

This four-day course builds on basic fire knowledge, awareness and safety procedures on board. It includes elements of command and control together with the importance of stability and ship integrity. The course is structured around a number of practical searches, rescue techniques, casualty evacuation practices and live fire exercises.


Culminating in assessed firefighting and search and rescue scenarios, successful candidates will be equipped to lead and manage shipboard firefighting teams.


Course Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the principals involved in controlling firefighting operations on board a vessel
  • Is able to control firefighting operations aboard ship
  • Is able to organise and train fire parties
  • Is able to inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment
  • Is able to investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire
